Here's an unusual business niche....

I had a friend do a variation of this in our local newspaper. So I wrote up my own little version of making some money while doing something fun.

Here goes:

Hour 1: Whenever I get a chance to entertain myself while working... I do. Hey, if work was fun wouldn't the world be a better place?

Get out a ruler, pen, pencil... or better yet your best graphics program. And start to create a MAZE. Yeah, a kids' maze - like you see at restaurants, a little activity to keep the kids busy. In your first hour, create an activity page that might be used at a restaurant.

Hour 2: In your second hour, find a restaurant that might use an activity page. See how those go hand in hand?

No, this isn't as hard as you might think. Think of a shopping center or mini mall type establishment that has a restaurant surrounded by a lot of shops/businesses. Call or visit the restaurant - tell them that you're a local resident that has some artwork - moreover, an activity sheet, that you'd like to get in front of the little children at their restaurant that could help out theirs and surrounding businesses.

You'll supply the crayons. If they say no - there are plenty of others. Someone will say yes.

Hour 3: Now it's time to contact those SURROUNDING BUSINESSES I keep mentioning. Call or visit - whichever you prefer - the shops/businesses surrounding the restaurant.

Explain that you are designing an activity sheet for (the restaurant) and ask if they are interested in making their logo an active part of the sheet. They pay you $40 and you put their logo inside of that maze you created in the first hour. A maze that will appear on 1000 activity sheets distributed at (the restaurant.)

That's $40/cpm - it's $32/cpm inside of my local newspaper with an ad that probably won't be found inside of a crowded newspaper. Get 5 to 10 businesses - that's $200-400 dollars.

Collect their logo's - you can grab it on their web site or have them send it by email, have them put it on a disk and pick it up, or scan it. Don't forget to collect the Restaurant's Logo.

The Last Hour: Incorporate the logos into your maze... see an example below. After you're finished making it look professional - take it to Kinko's.

Print out 1000 copies at their going rate - .08 to .10 cents per copy here. That's $100 bucks - next go pick up a few boxes of crayons. Not every kid will need his or her own box - get around 100 crayons and they will go around.

Deliver the crayons and activity sheets to the restaurant. If you want to make a display of it - get a folder to put the sheets in and some cups to separate the crayons into. Last - just let all the sponsoring businesses know that the activity sheets are now being distributed.

You might want to let the restaurant know that there will be sponsors on the activity sheets - as they may ask for a small cut - but also to make sure there are no surprises.

That's a day of drawing for kids and meeting new people and you can make $300 doing it. Sound like a good weekend project?
