Default Suggestions For A (Meat) Pie Business

Hello everybody.

I've been reading this forum for two years or so and I never posted anything because I felt a bit shy for my English (I'm from Holland).

I've been traveling to Australia six years ago and it was amazing, I really had the time of my life there.

One thing that I really miss here in Holland is the delicious Meat Pies that we don't have here. I was hooked on those pies. At least one pie a day I eat.

I had this idea for many years and talked about it with a good friend of mine (he is from Australia) to start a Pie business here in Holland.

So, my question to you is, since a lot of you are from Australia, what would be the potential, do you guys eat a lot of pies and how could I get those pies into Holland?

I really think it has potential here. The people I speak that went to Australia liked the pies too.

Has anybody some suggestions?

Thanks for the great forum.

Default One of your best customers may well be...

none other than Keith Richards! Keith is a rather fussy bloke when it comes to eating, but he LOVES his meat pies!

Default Do this first...

Victor:

The first thing you Need To Do is get in touch with your Government and find out about the import laws as they relate to pies.

Contact your "Customs" department, or whatever they are called in your country - the people that handle the rules and regulations of goods coming into your country. They might not be able to help you directly, but they should be able to put you in touch with the correct government department who can.

Once you have done that, let us know what the rules are and we'll cover the next step.

Michael Ross.

I've called the department for information about importing pies, or foods. I'm aloud to import meat pies from Australia like they say only have to pay two kinds of different taxes.

But my concern would be if it's possible to import pies all the way from Australia? How long would the shipping be and would the pies stay fresh?

Also with all the taxes and shipping cost wouldn't be better to have some sort of franchise business and make the pies here in Holland

Thanks for the responses.

Victor - the key to a good pie is the recipe, quality ingredients and a good baker. Now, I'm sure you've got the last two where you live .... and the net is a surefire place to look for good recipes.

One of our local butchers here in Helensburgh started making his own pies to sell from his shop. His pie business is growing and he's now boxing the pies to sell as gifts .....

My thought would be to test some recipes yourself, get a great name for your pies and develop the business from there. There might be start-up grants from the EEC/your own local region.

Good luck!

Margaret

Default Why Has No One Suggested This?

Why not produce the pies in Holland?

Contact pie manufactures and work out a licensing agreement to produce the pies in Holland. You might end up supplying all of Europe, if you wanted to grow that large!
